12 career tips of Christmas – day two
Tracking your achievements
At this time of year, everyone in adland is busy crystal-ball gazing to predict what the year ahead will look like. It’s easy to forget that the year end should also signal a time to refocus and reflect on past achievements as well as plan ahead. With that in mind, NABS is running its own 12 Days of Christmas series, on career tips. On each working day, right the way up to Christmas eve, the NABS career team will be sharing their expertise on everything from handling pressure to building networks, from listing achievements, to adding value.
It’s difficult to measure just how much you’ve achieved unless you keep track of past successes, these past wins are career landmarks, and while your career will be full of highs and lows it’s important that when the good times roll you take time to make a note of why things are going so well and what you have done to get yourself into that position.
Document the new skills that you’ve mastered to achieve that career milestone and also jot down what skills you could do with to take the next steps towards reaching your next goal.
Building up your own personal portfolio not only gives you a sense of success but it will help define what your greatest professional achievements are, and puts them in an easily accessible format that you can look back on and take pride in. It’ll prepare you to stand up for yourself and showcase your talents, displaying how much you are worth to the people that matter. Maintaining this list will also mean you are fully prepared for appraisals rather than racking your brain the day before the meeting, trying to pin down what you’ve been doing for the past six months!
